About Lake Hiwassee, Arcadia, OK
The community of Lake Hiwassee is located one mile south of historic Rt. 66 just outside of Arcadia, Oklahoma. This 300 acre lake was created when J. M. Young, acting as the Lake Hiwassee Development Company, built an earth and rock dam to retain the waters of Spring Creek. Construction started in 1935 and took four years to complete using mule teams and manual labor.
In1943 lot owners cooperatively formed the Lake Hiwassee Improvement Corporation and purchased the lake, easements, rights of way and unplatted lands from the original developer. Today, each platted lot at Lake Hiwassee has a voting share of stock in the Corporation and a Board of Directors elected at yearly stockholders meetings is the governing body of the community.
Lot owners and their invited guests enjoy swimming and fishing in the bass stocked lake and stockholders may register their personal boats for lake use. Sail and paddle boats are allowed, but JetSkis and other personal water craft are prohibited. Water Skiing and Wake Boarding are popular recreations and Lake Hiwassee has frequently been represented at regional and national contests.
While the July 4th fireworks display is the high point of the summer season, Lake Hiwassee's family recreational activities extend year round. The community Pavilion, with volley ball and horse shoe courts, softball field and play ground, is a favorite place for family reunions, birthday parties and other stockholder activities. Duck hunting from lake approved blind sites is allowed in season and a skeet range is available to keep shooting skills honed.
Community involvement is a lake tradition. There are numerous fund raising activities such as chili cookoffs, auctions, and bake sales. The village atmosphere and security of Lake Hiwassee make it a unique place for a first or second home and a wonderland for kids.
